EXCITING TRANSFORMATIONS OF BIOMASS

EXCITING TRANSFORMATIONS OF BIOMASS

On October 12, a lecture-discussion "Biomass processing for hydrogen energy technologies" was held at the University "Boiling Point", which was conducted by Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Chemical Technologies Viktor Alexandrovich Klushin.

The lecture, to which everyone was invited, became one of the events of the strategic project "Hydrogen Energy Systems" within the framework of the Strategic Academic Leadership Program "Priority 2030".

Hydrogen is a green fuel with zero emissions, containing sufficient energy, potentially suitable for electricity production. It is possible to convert the chemical energy of hydrogen oxidation into electrical energy using fuel cells. In their structure, fuel cells have many parts made of polymers, which, in turn, are made from hydrocarbon raw materials.

The main source of renewable carbon raw materials is considered to be plant biomass, which is a real alternative to crude oil and natural gas and provides compounds with a low carbon footprint.

During the lecture-discussion, the audience learned about the most promising direction of converting biomass into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, which is considered as a "platform compound" - the basis for the synthesis of valuable compounds, including monomers and polymers. The transition of the polymer industry to renewable plant raw materials will contribute to solving global environmental problems and ensure the sustainability and environmental safety of plastics production.

The transformation of liquid and solid waste from the synthesis of "platform compounds", known as humins, into a whole range of value-added products, including organic compounds, porous carbon materials, thermosetting binders, anticorrosive coatings capable of replacing similar materials based on fossil raw materials, was also considered.
